| Can a shiny lip gloss slim your hips?
Rub on a lip gloss and lose weight. Sip a berry drink and look younger. Down some iced tea and burn calories. If only it were that simple. “Always on the lips … never on the hips," promise ads for the new "Fuze Slenderize Guilt free" lip gloss. Marketed by Too Faced Cosmetics, the flavored lip gloss claims it can suppress your appetite with the same mix of minerals and ingredients found in Coca-Cola's Fuze energy fruit drinks. As Americans continue to struggle with weight loss, marketers are getting more outlandish with their quick-fix diet claims. At least with Fuze, a blend of the minerals chromium and L-carnitine, along a hydroxycitric acide extract called Super Citrimax, the calorie conscious had to drink a full bottle of the beverage to get the promised hunger-easing metabolism boost.
Ada's opening in North Naples where Fresh Market leaves
Ada's Natural & Organic Foods Supermarket plans to open at Airport-Pulling and Vanderbilt Beach roads in 2008. The 20,000-square-foot space in The Collection shopping center owned by Boca Raton-based Woolbright Development originally was planned for The Fresh Market, but the North Carolina-based grocer sued the developer and pulled out of the lease. Ada's, which has supermarkets already open in Cape Coral and Fort Myers and another planned for Estero, is a specialty retailer of natural, organic and whole fresh foods, meats, fish and poultry, nutritional products such as vitamins, herbs and supplements, cosmetics and beauty aids, cleaning products and pet products. “The signing of Ada's is a home run for residents in the surrounding community," said Pete Schlang, Woolbright's director of leasing, in a prepared statement released by Woolbright.
Torvalds breaks down Linux
Torvalds made his comments during a two-part interview with Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation. Torvalds is a Fellow at the foundation, which funds his work. He can be heard in his own words via podcast on the Linux Foundation Web site. Part 2 of the interview will be posted in early February. Torvalds also said GPLv2 remains his open source license of choice for the Linux kernel and that he would remain pragmatic on future decisions but that stance would not blind him to investigating GPLv3 under specific circumstances. He said trust is the fuel that energizing the Linux development process and commercial vendors can only establish that trust via actions not words. Torvalds said the mythical "Linux community" does not refer to one big happy open source family, but that the development process is made up a many groups some with different ideals and goals.
Make My Day
It's sort of how Western Civilization felt when the calendar year changed to 2000 (although the millennium didn't officially begin until 2001!). We had reached a major milestone, but we didn't know how to feel. I was born exactly at midnight on June 27th, so on the night of the 26th, I watched the second hands march slowly toward 12:00 on my bedroom clock until they reached their target. "I'm 40 now," I mumbled to my wife, wondering how much longer I would be able to stay up so late. "Happy birthday, old man." She kissed me on the cheek. We watched a "Scrubs" rerun, and I fell asleep before it was half over. Dangit. I thought old people didn't need as much sleep. My older friends and family scoffed at my worries. "Forty is nothing," they would say. "Wait until you hit your fifties." On the other hand, Oldest Daughter would remind me 12 times a day for three weeks, "Wow, 40 years old.
Frank’s part of local folklore
One day a helicopter from Fort Hood landed in the parking lot. The crew ordered 45 cheeseburgers to take on maneuvers, she said. I only had one girl helping me that day, said Mrs. Smith. We were running around like crazy cooking burgers. We knew then we had been discovered. Franks Lakeview Inn In 1955 the Corps wanted the Smiths corner location back to build offices for the Little River Project. They gave Frank his choice of land in the area, Mrs. Smith said. Frank was a visionary. He liked the view from that location overlooking the lake. Mrs. Smith said they built a second establishment on the hilltop and named it Franks Lakeview Inn Restaurant. At one end they constructed a three-bedroom home where they lived. We had some cabins across from the restaurant we rented for $5 and $10 a night, she said.
The Broad Contemporary Art Museum's first show is slick, but not new
For months, Southern California's newest art museum has been gearing up for its grand public opening this weekend. It's about time: The Broad Contemporary Art Museum the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's polished, $56 million, Renzo Piano-designed building has been rolling out the previews and invitation-only events for a couple weeks, generating buzz and anticipation throughout the art world. Most of the artwork in the opening show which will hang for one year is from L.A. billionaire developer Eli Broad's personal collection. He also paid for the building, and threw in a $10 million collecting allowance. Showcasing Broad's collection means copious helpings of John Baldessari, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Edward Ruscha, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol.

Women's Hoops Notes: Bryant coach Burke has come a long way from Toll ...
Not quite a typical Saturday for Mary Burke, women's basketball coach at Bryant University and one of 14 men and women who will be inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame. "When I got the letter, I couldn't believe it," Burke said. "Then I checked the schedule. Am I home or away? We play a lot of away games in New England, but am I in Albany or Syracuse?" Seeing she would be home, she relaxed, but only a little. Her game starts 30 minutes before the PC-Louisville men's game, and when the other inductees are introduced at halftime, she will still be working. "I won't be there for that, but there's a dinner at night, and I'll be OK for that," she said. Burke has come a long way since her high school days as a basketball and volleyball star at Toll Gate in Warwick.
