Citizens help CHP catch fleeing suspect

Several bystanders helped capture a man fleeing from the California Highway Patrol this afternoon in Chico.

Officer Bob Boyer said he was driving south on Highway 99 just before 1 p.m. when he spotted a blue pickup speeding north near Entler Avenue.

Boyer turned around and clocked the vehicle, a Dodge Dakota, at 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. When he tried to stop it, the driver exited at the Park/Skyway off-ramp and turned east onto Skyway.

The truck went over a curb and crashed into hedges near a building housing the Bank of America and Clearwire Communications.

The driver, identified as Sammy Sofar Grijalva Lenz, ran from the crash. A customer coming out of Bank of America began chasing him, as Boyer tried to get ahead of the suspect in his patrol car.

With the help of motorists who tried to cut the suspect off, technicians at the Les Schwab Tire Center on Notre Dame, and the bank customer, the man was cornered and taken into custody.

Man charged with selling fake IDs

Manuel Acevedo went to area flea markets and drummed up business like any legitimate businessman would.

He passed out business cards and talked up his services. But an investigation revealed what he was selling was anything but legitimate, according to Manatee County Sheriff's Office reports.

Acevedo is facing numerous charges of identity theft and forgery of Social Security cards, Florida driver's licenses, registration and resident alien cards, sheriff's reports say.

Detectives say Acevedo passed out business cards at several local flea markets offering illegal immigrants forged documents.

In June, he gave a business card to an informant working for sheriff's detectives and Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents.

The informant called a phone number on the card and got Acevedo.

Tories demand Salmond quit as MP

On July 25, he took part in three votes on immigration, the machinery of government and home affairs. The other occasion was on November 19, when he voted in favour of the European Communities (Finance) Bill.

The figures also show he missed a number of votes during the Holyrood election campaign.

It is not the first time that Mr Salmond has been criticised over his decision to continue as both an MP and an MSP.

The Liberal Democrats accused him of breaking a pre-election promise to accept only one salary.

However, the First Minister later announced he would be donating the one-third of his Holyrood salary to which he is entitled as a so-called "dual mandate" politician to a special trust fund to help community projects in the north-east of Scotland.
